In parallel to the opening of Dumfries House, the creation of a new neighbourhood in Cumnock, called Knockroon, is a manifestation of the commitment of The Prince’s Charities to the regeneration and sustainable development of the East Ayrshire region, which has suffered an economic downturn as a result of the decline of the coal mining industry. The Knockroon Farm was acquired along with the Dumfries House estate and is ideally situated for a sustainable extension of the town of Cumnock on the main road to Auchinleck.

The Masterplan for the new neighbourhood has resulted from a collaborative process involving residents, community groups, local businesses, and local authority members and officers and a careful study of the region’s history, architectural and urban traditions and present needs and conditions. The week-long Enquiry by Design (EbD) was an intensive effort to engage local intelligence and international expertise, resulting in a blueprint for the new community, which can be elaborated upon and taken forward through planning approval and construction. This report is the record of that intensive and exciting effort.
