The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment

Graduate Fellows in Sustainable Architecture and Design, 2009

Following their three weeks at The Foundation’s 2009 Summer School, the five graduate fellows in the 2009-2011 cohort quickly settled into life at The Foundation, taking masterclasses and lectures every Thursday afternoon, and writing a book review for publication from a selection of the new acquisitions at The Foundation Library. The bulk of their time is spent in placements in departments at The Foundation, working alongside professional urban designers, architects and practitioners on live projects. A highlight was the opportunity this March to present their work to the Foundation’s Patron, HRH The Prince of Wales.

The 2009-2011 Graduate Fellows are:

Kathleen CasantaKathleen Casanta
Kate graduated from University of Notre Dame's School of Architecture in 2005. Since that time, she has been working at the office of Robert A.M. Stern Architects on a variety of master planning and traditional architecture projects.

Dominic HoneysettDominic Honeysett
Dominic graduated with a BA in Spatial design from Central St Martins in 2007 and went on to train as an Urban Planner at University College London. He worked as a consultant with Space Syntax and Croydon Council where he developed and tested a sustainable planning tool kit for urban planners.
Dominic has been working at The Prince’s Foundation since July 2009 on the Graduate Fellow program in Architecture and Sustainable Urbanism. During the first year of his placement he has contributed to the development of layout configuration in live urban extension projects in Tetcott Devon, Rushden Northamptonshire and Long Stratton Norfolk through the Foundation’s Enquiry By Design process.
His work and study has developed into focusing on adapting mixed use, pedestrian-friendly community led urban spaces, to show the social and economic benefits of sustainable urbanism.

Abbey OklakAbbey Oklak
Abbey recently graduated from University of Notre Dame with a BA in Architecture. She has since been working at an architectural practice in the US where she had the opportunity to work with clients seeking to design and build communities based on traditional neighbourhoods. Since joining The Prince's Foundation, Abbey has worked with the Design Team on various projects ranging from a town’s regeneration framework plan to organising a Certification Scheme for sustainable urbanism. She has learned the value of holistic planning and the importance for all aspects of planning to be considered.

Mura QuigleyMura Quigley
A recent MSc graduate of Urban and Rural Design at Queens’ University Belfast, Mura was introduced to PFBE through the Poundbury Series. Her BSc in Environmental Planning was supplemented by an internship with Donegal County Council where she gained practical experience in local government planning and GIS. Mura’s work within PFBE has focused on community collaboration and external affairs, assisting in the Glenarm Enquiry by Design, writing consultation documents for draft planning policies, developing educational resources including the New Buildings in Old Places Website and providing valuable research for incoming projects to PFBE.

Michael RomeroMichael Romero
Michael graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Architecture. Since graduation, Michael has worked in Normandy, France where he documented damaged historic churches and public buildings and has been involved in traditional architectural design, project management, and construction administration for civic buildings in the local vernacular in Florida. He also founded an traditional architecture and urban design practice in Chicago, where he focused on urban infill and masterplan projects.
