Gordon Park Pavilion, Ellon - Week 4, Wednesday

The Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment

04 November 2009

It was a frosty, but bright, morning on site. Leonard is up on the scaffolding ready to start installing the sarking boards.

A view across the frosted grass to the pavilion.

Billy is working on cutting each of the rafters and adding a wedge for the kick of the slates at the eave.

Barney and Matt, one of the slaters, direct Leonard on the best methods of dressing slates. Leonard will return to Jamaica, where they are beginning to use slate as a roofing material, and he hoped to learn some of the techniques to take with him from these Scottish pros.

Martin Cook carves in wood as well as stone, and carved the four cardinal points on the inside top plate of the pavilion. There is a custom weathervane with an arrow that will spin on the inside of the shelter pointing to one of the carvings in which direction the wind is blowing.

The following are a few pictures of the frame on a sunny day:

The joiners working on installing the sarking on the roof.

One section of the sarking boards complete.

Inside the shelter with the sarking boards installed, looking out to another beautiful sunset.
