Gordon Park Pavilion, Ellon - Week 3, Friday

The Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment

30 October 2009

It is an early morning after the Community Council party for the first day with all of the apprentices working together on site to see the timber and masonry come together. The timber arrives thankfully to Ed Taylor for driving down to help transport the material to the site. Unfortunately the master timber framers, Jack and Luke, were stranded on the road late into the night after car trouble, missing the thank you party.

The apprentices begin setting out each timber post on the built up pad stone bases and marking the location to drill the hole to dowel them into the pad stones.

Every piece of timber is numbered with traditional carpenters’ marks so that they know very specifically its location in the frame.

The first bay is set on the pad stones and the scale of the structure begins to emerge. Many local residents stop by to watch as the frame is erected in just two hours.
