Gordon Park Pavilion, Ellon - Week 3, Thursday
The Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment
29 October 2009
Four of The Prince’s Foundation Graduate Fellows come to visit the site after having collaborated on the design in the Summer School. In the canteen, Billy and Matt explain some of the challenges working on the frame over the past three weeks and then take the Fellows up to Scotia’s workshop to show them the work on the seating and roof.

The masons give a presentation of the rubble wall building and pointing for the Fellows.
Pointing continues on a second dry day on the nearly complete rubble walls.
A scaffolding team arrives to erect the scaffolding for the perimeter and central tower in preparation for the frame’s arrival.
John Addison, the structural engineer, makes another site visit to check on the stone bases before the frame goes up.
After a day of hard work, the Ellon Community Council hosted a traditionally Scottish dinner and ceilidh as a thank you for all of the people involved with building the pavilion. The apprentices were led into the event by a local community member playing the bagpipes.

One of the Summer School drawings of the pavilion was transferred on to the cake with the selected Doric inscription for the floor of the pavilion. “Folk nae wa’s mak’ a toon” or translated, “Men, not walls, make a town.”
A group picture of many of the people involved in the design, preparations and build of the pavilion cutting the cake.

Traditional Scottish music and dance were performed by local Ellon community members.
The dancers and other locals then got us all out on the dance floor and taught us some of the traditional ceilidh dances. Many, many thanks to Moira and Sandra from the Community Council for providing such a wonderful night of Scottish culture, laughter and fun!
